While We Were Yet Sinners

Looking upward to Jesus

The devil will try to move you in and out of grace. What I mean is, that we have a tendency to experience periods of condemnation and guilt and may even believe we have fallen out of grace. But the gift of grace and the receiving of it was not only for the times we feel like we have it, but also for the times we don’t — when we feel unworthy and unjustified. This of course does not include feelings of guilt or shame from sin that we may have committed recently and knowingly disobeyed God’s commandments. There is a proper purpose for guilt and that is to bring us back to grace. But what I am referring to here is those times where we are experiencing adversity and the devil takes advantage of our vulnerable circumstance and makes accusations and charges that we “deserve what we get.”

If God gives you a message that you are forgiven and that He will help you, it is not because at that time, you will from then on be worthy of it. God’s grace comes to us even while we are undeserving. He blesses us ‘once ‘ for our past, present, and future. He knows our future, even our future falls and failures, and yet still gives His grace to us.

God will not forsake us if we do not forsake Him. If we keep God our God, even through times of weakness and failure, He will not abandon us. God is our Father and a father does not forsake his children, even when they make mistakes or disobey him. The important truth to remember here is that we are imperfect children and will continue to make mistakes, but these mistakes or sins do not separate us from our Father. This truth is exemplified in the Scripture of Jesus’ sacrifice for us in that, “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” By emphasis, not: while we were yet — holy, or perfect, or righteous, or even good — Christ died for us.

So in those times when you feel like you are perhaps unholy, or unforgiven, or even a bit creepy — remember — God’s grace is not based on feeling, but on faith. You may consider yourself a filthy wretch, a reprobate, even a worm, but God looks upon you as He looks upon His Son. He sees upon you the covering of the Lamb’s blood and sees nothing but His righteousness. He looks at you and because you fear Him, He delights in what He sees, His child that He loves.
