Fathom this…

Scale-freedigitalphotos.netWe were separated from our God, our creator, The Creator, because of the ‘fall of man’ or more accurately, our own sins. How would we or could we get reconnected, un-separated, rejoined with Him?

It is sin that separates. God cannot look upon sin.

Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves? – Habakkuk 1:13

And since all men sin, all men are/were eternally separated from God.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, – Romans 3:23

Since every man(woman) is a sinner, every man is separated from God.

But how, or why, would an all-knowing, omniscient God create such a work for His own pleasure, His own comfort, His own companionship, and then, by His own intrinsic nature–a perfect and holy and just God–be held to His very own nature? It’s as if the God of all creation had, in a sense, boxed Himself in a corner.

The only way out of this “box”, this predicament, was to somehow take away the sins of man (humanity) and make them perfect as He is. This would allow or reconcile the demand and application of His nature as a just God. If He declared that no sin could be in His presence, to go against this would nullify or contradict God Himself being perfect and just.

But how could the unjust (us) be made just? If there is transgression, then there has to be penalty, punishment, or restitution. This is the intrinsic nature and essence of true justice. Anything less than equal restitution for equal transgression is either mercy or injustice. If the penalty is less than the transgression, there is mercy. If the punishment is greater than the offence, this is injustice, or even cruelty.

So the sins of mankind had to be paid for. Somehow, some way, someone had to pay the price for these sins; had to be punished for the scale of justice to be balanced. But what was the penalty for sin? The penalty for sin is death.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23

Here once again brings the question of God having apparently boxed Himself into another corner. If death was/is the restitution, then whoever “sinneth” must “payeth”.
If all have sinned, then all must pay the price of death. Exclamation! Woe, woe, woe!

But what if there was just one person who did not sin? Then this “person’s” life would not be required of him. This “person” would not be worthy of death, not have a “negative balance on his ledger.” He would have a positive balance on his ledger, a surplus, an excess that could be given to those who were/are “short”.

But how could this surplus be made transferable or redeemable? If guilty men were to be made innocent, would the scale of justice only be balanced by an innocent “man” being found guilty? Yes. If someone were to offer their perfect, just, and innocent life as a sacrifice for the guilty, this penalty would be “overpayment” on his ledger.

The only one who could make this payment was Jesus Christ. He, being God Himself, came to this earth and became man to pay the price for our sins. Jesus Christ was completely holy and without sin His entire life. He was born without sin, being born of a virgin.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. – Matthew 1:18

So Jesus, our Lord and Savior, allowed Himself to be judged guilty, though He was innocent. All of our sins were–as it were–attributed to Him, that our ledgers would be balanced.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5-6 KJV

Jesus paid the price for sins, that being death, upon the Cross. But that God would not be unjust–allowing an innocent to be found guilty–Jesus, on the third day, was raised from the dead. Yes, the price was paid, Jesus died a horrible and excruciating death, which began with scourging and a crown of thorns pressed into his skull much earlier in the day.

Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, – John 19:1-2 KJV

The next time you hear the scripture verse…,

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. – 1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV

think about your own ledger. Imagine seeing your ledger opened in front of you at the Judgment Seat; knowing that you’ve filled column after column and page after page of debt, yeah, sins. But as you see the glorious light of heaven flow between the opening pages, on every page is a seal, of the most beautiful shade and hue of red you have ever seen, saying, “PAID IN FULL, Love, Jesus!”
